Doors are one of the most common Obstacles in the Tomb Raider Games. Being very common in earlier games, they have become less so over time. Doors come in many forms and can be opened in a variety of ways. The most common way to open a door is by activating a Trigger (pushing a button, flipping a switch, stepping on a pressure plate) or using a Key. But there are also doors that can be overcome by simply opening them, by prying them open, by kicking them down or by shooting them with explosives. A special type of door are the Trapdoors. Doors can also be timed, meaning they close after a given amount of time.

Types of Doors

  • Automatic Door
Doors that open when approached, triggered by a visible or invisible pressure plate, found in the original Tomb Raider.
  • Switch Door
A door that opens with a button/switch/lever, found in the original Tomb Raider, Tomb Raider II, Tomb Raider III.
  • Key Door
A door that opens with a key or an artefact that serves as a type of key. Found in the original Tomb Raider, Tomb Raider II, Tomb Raider III, The Last Revelation.
A door that closes again after a short time. This one is usually opened by a Button, Switch or Lever. To open it again the trigger has to be activated again.
Door that has to be opened with the Crowbar (The Last Revelation, Crowbar Door)
A special kind of door attached to the ceiling or floor.
A door Lara can kick in to open it.
A gate in Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris.

Occurrence

Tomb Raider

In the original Tomb Raider most doors are opened by a Wall Lever, a Pressure Pad or a Key.

Tomb Raider II

Tomb Raider III

One of the new door types in Tomb Raider III is found in the very first level. In the High Security Compound the door is opened remotely by a guard when stepping through a laser motion sensor. Another new door type is found in the Antarctica level, where you can pry one open using a crowbar.
