Gathering (or Scavenging), along with Hunting is a new feature introduced to the Tomb Raider Games in Tomb Raider (2013).
In "Tomb Raider (2013): A Survivor is Born" Lara is able to gather Salvage and XP. By collecting salvage, Lara will gain parts for improving her gear. XP can be gained from either finding food containers or, after purchasing the Ingenuity Upgrade Survivalist Lara, from plants she will then be able to identify.
This concept was expanded in Rise of the Tomb Raider, where Lara is able to gather a variety of Resources (salvage, wood, herbs, magnesite ore and more) to craft her own arrows, heal herself or improve her gear.
