The Ark of the Covenant is an artefact featured in the original Tomb Raider. It's located in the Main Hall of the Croft Manor, and it's most likely put there as an Easter Egg.
As fans tended to include it into the list of Lara's discoveries, it is now assumed that Lara really found the artefact sometime before 1996.
The Ark of the Covenant is actually an artefact mentioned in the Bible, and said to contain the stone tablets with the "Ten Commandments".
Appearance
Golden, decorated chest.
Historical Precedent
The Ark of the Covenant was described in the Bible as a sacred container, holding the Ten Commandments, Aaron's rod and manna. It was built at the command of God on Mount Sinai. God was believed to have communicated with Moses "from between the cherubim" on the Ark's cover. The Ark has achieved near-mythological status in recent history, having been the object of countless searches and unproven claims of possession, with many divergent popular stories of its fate.
