In the Tomb Raider (2013) reboot Sam is a colleague of Lara's. After the ship wreck of the Endurance Lara and Sam get separated. While Lara is captured and strung up in the Scavenger Den Sam roams the island and finds Matthias, a seemingly friendly islander. But soon after Lara finds them he turns out to be in league with the scavengers and he kidnaps her.
Sam seems to a central piece in the storyline of the new Tomb Raider game. A main part of Lara's adventure on the island will revolve around finding and rescuing her friend, who is being held hostage by the scavengers.
