Challenge Tombs (aka Optional Tombs) are a feature in Rise of the Tomb Raider.
Challenge Tombs are, as in Tomb Raider (2013) before, optional and can be skipped. They do not contain any story elements. These tombs are revealed as soon as Lara approaches them; again there are wind chimes located near the entrances to these tombs that emit a very distinctive sound. Whenever an Optional Tomb is nearby, a text appears to the screen: "Map location updated. Secret tomb nearby." Completing an Optional Tomb awards the player with additional XP and ancient knowledge hidden in a Codex.
In addition to Optional Tombs there are hidden Crypts in Rise of the Tomb Raider. These are not as huge as tombs and contain the sarcophagus of a founder of Kitezh.
