Remark: This article describes the historical political and military tension called the Cold War referred to in the novel The Lost Cult and in the level Kazakhstan - Project Carbonek in Tomb Raider Legend. For information about the level in The Golden Mask, see The Cold War.

Cold War was the state of both political and military tension between the Western world (led by the United States and its allies) and the communist world (led by the Soviet Union and its allies). The situation is often dated to be lasted from the year 1947 to 1991. [1]

It's referred to in the novel The Lost Cult and in the level Kazakhstan - Project Carbonek in Tomb Raider Legend. Also, in the Tomb Raider II Add-on The Golden Mask, is a level called The Cold War, set on Melnikov Island, part of the Aleutian Islands, Alaska, a location that once belonged to Russia.

In The Lost Cult

The character named Lancaster Urdmann is a former arms-dealer and Cold War military financier, who nowadays collects and sells antiquities.

In Tomb Raider Legend

Lara infiltrates a military base in Kazakhstan and stumbles upon a secret Soviet laboratory that was dedicated to investigate the paranormal, during the early parts of the Cold War.

Alister has his moment to shine by finding obscure references suggesting that more answers might be found in Kazakhstan. A secret Soviet laboratory was dedicated to investigating the paranormal early in the Cold War, and judging by how quickly and savagely the lab was shut down and covered up by the KGB, indications are that the relics they found were indeed what Lara is searching for. Only Lara isn't the only one who's learned of the site, and she braces herself for what might turn out to be a very uncomfortable reunion.
