Jacqueline Natla is a character from the original Tomb Raider (and its remake Tomb Raider Anniversary), making her return in Tomb Raider Underworld.<br><br>

Jacqueline Natla's background
Natla was one of the three legendary Rulers of Atlantis, along with Tihocan and Qualopec. Together they created the Scion, a device of immeasurable power. This device was split into three parts, one for each of the rulers, representing the ruling structure that Atlantis was governed by.

Natla abused this power, however, using the Scion to experiment in genetic engineering and create a new, improved race of Atlanteans. When they learned of this, Tihocan and Qualopec sentenced Natla to eternal imprisonment, freezing her and then burying her in present day New Mexico.

During World War II, the U.S. began testing nuclear weapons in Los Alamos, New Mexico. One of these tests happened to detonate very near to Natla's prison, freeing her from her eternal punishment.

Natla adopted the guise of Jacqueline Natla and founded Natla Technologies, a very successful company which gave her considerable financial backing. With the rest of her people long dead, there was no one to stand in the way of her experiments, and she began to research the whereabouts of the Scion.

Natla's powers, at least in Continuity 2 (Crystal Dynamics, TRA), seem to include superstrength, supernatural firepower, the ability to fly and the ability to teleport. She can also apparently shapeshift and is able to change from human to Atlantean form.

In the original game (TR1, Continuity 1) it is suggested that her wings are a mutant that she wears on her shoulders, and that her ability to shoot fireballs is due to a mutant attached or grafted to her forearm. There is no hint in TR1 that she has the ability to shapeshift or teleport, or that she has superstrength or is immortal. It is arguable that the conversion of Natla from human to superhuman in the style of a DC or Marvel Comics or Disney villianness, demonstrates the move from a British (Core Design) to an American (Crystal Dynamics) aesthetic.

Tomb Raider & Tomb Raider Anniversary
In the Tomb Raider / Anniversary storyline she hired Lara Croft to travel to Peru to uncover Qualopec's third of an artefact called the Scion, but underestimated both Lara's ability and her moral solidarity. When Larson, one of Natla's employees, revealed to Lara that there was more going on than she originally thought, Lara took up the trail of the Scion, unwilling to blindly hand over such a powerful artefact.

Lara travelled from Peru to Greece, and then to an ancient city in Egypt collecting the three pieces of the Scion before Natla could. However, Natla caught up with Lara on a cliff side in Egypt and stole the completed Scion from her. Natla travelled to the great pyramid, an ancient Atlantean construction, to finally complete her experimentation.

Lara infiltrates the great pyramid and finds the control room at the top of an enormous chasm. With Natla's experiments almost complete, Lara shoots the Scion to prevent the ability to create Natla's hideous monsters. Natla jumps on Lara, in an attempt to prevent her from shooting the Scion, but apparently falling to her death far below.

However, Natla is not defeated, she reappears in a final showdown with Lara, this time revealing her true Atlantean heritage. She sports red wings and blasts fire balls at Lara. When she is sufficiently injured she plays dead, lulling Lara into a false sense of security, but will then keep fighting until she is finally killed.

She is an unlockable character in Tomb Raider Anniversary.

Unlockable biography
Collect 41 artifacts in Anniversary and the following biography is unlocked:
* Jacqueline Natla is the owner and CEO of Natla Technologies, one of the world's largest electronics companies. She is the holder of several key computer hardware patents, and her research and development is one of the industry's most secretive and prolific innovators. Little is known about Miss Natla's private life other than she never gives interviews and rarely makes public appearances. Colleagues and business rivals alike say she is intimidatingly intelligent and a demanding perfectionist.
During the final level of Tomb Raider Legend, Bolivia - The Looking Glass crates can be seen with the Natla Industries logo. The boxes were thought to be an Easter egg. However, in Tomb Raider Underworld it is revealed that Amanda has a corporal relationship with Natla.

Tomb Raider Underworld
Jacqueline Natla returns in Tomb Raider Underworld, held prisoner in a glass tube on a freighter ship by Amanda Evert. Early in the game she tells Lara about Helheim and Avalon being one and the same and informs Lara that she needs Thor's relics to gain access. After visiting Jan Mayen Island to retrieve Thor's Hammer, Lara sets off to the Andaman Sea on the coast of Thailand to find Amanda's ship again. Lara confronts and threatens to kill Natla, but is stopped when Natla explains that a ritual is also needed to open the gates of Helheim; a ritual that only Natla knows. Realising she has no choice if she wants to enter Helheim and find her mother, Lara then smashes the capsule open, allowing Natla to escape. After arriving at Avalon, Natla reveals that she was manipulating Lara to reach an ancient device called the Midgard Serpent to bring about the Seventh Age. She also claims that she killed Lara's father in Thailand after he betrayed her. Lara manages to destroy the Midgard Serpent, and then knocks Natla into the Eitr surrounding the device by throwing Thor's Hammer at her.

Appearance
In Tomb Raider Underworld Jacqueline Natla is considerably taller and prettier than in Tomb Raider Anniversary, which was made by a different design team.

The following text can be found in Lara's journal:
* Natla was the Immortal Queen of Atlantis, and more recently CEO of Natla Technologies. Somehow she lost her connection with the powerful artifacts of her reign millenia ago, and recently began devoting her knowledge and intellect toward recovering it all from ancient sites around the world. Her aim is to initiate what she calls The Seventh Age, of which I know nothing other than that it would be a very bad turn for humanity. I buried her on a remote island, but apparently Amanda has dug her out and is keeping her prisoner as her own personal Encyclopaedia Atlantica. I hope Amanda understands that she's sitting on a time bomb, and that everything Natla tells her is filtered by her own agenda.

Beneath the Ashes & Lara's Shadow
Beneath the Ashes Story

Natla is not a character in Beneath the Ashes; however, it is suggested that she is still alive. In the final scene of Beneath the Ashes, Lara has learned to control both the Thralls and the Doppelgänger. After Lara establishes that the Doppelgänger has to obey her, the camera shifts and it is not possible to hear what mission or instructions Lara gives the Doppelgänger. However when the camera returns Lara is saying "Make sure Natla suffers". As the Doppelgänger leaves the room Zip says "You're letting her go? She killed Alister!", and Lara replies "And now, she is an instrument of his vengeance".

In the second cutscene of Lara's Shadow, the Doppelgänger comes across Natla in Helheim; Natla has suffered severe injuries, presumably from Thor's Hammer and from immersion in the Eitr. Using the words "Ohk Ehsivar" Natla orders the Doppelgänger to help her back to the pod device that the Doppelganger was created in. Natla then instructs her to reactivate the pod and waits slumped inside, presumably waiting for some regeneration process to begin. She gives the Doppelgänger some final orders, namely to kill Lara and then to commit suicide, the latter appearing to disconcert the Doppelgänger somewhat. Four days later beneath the Croft Manor (see Beneath the Ashes) Lara somehow frees the Doppelgänger from the control of the magic words Okh Eshivar and suggests that the newly independent Doppelgänger should "make Natla suffer". The Doppelgänger returns to Helheim and turns Natla's pod device off. Natla falls to the ground, gets crushed underneath some rocks and finally is left lying in a pool of Eitr. When the Doppelgänger approaches, Natla again orders her to help. However the Doppelgänger thinks back to what Lara has told her - "You are no longer a slave" (we see a flashback) - and does not obey. Natla realizes she is in trouble and calls for the Thralls to save her, but they don't show up. Natla screams and presumably dies. We see a close-up of the Doppelgänger's face: she smiles.

Voices
* Grey DeLisle (Tomb Raider Anniversary, Tomb Raider Underworld)
* Thought to be either Vicky Arnold or Susie Hamilton in Tomb Raider [reference to be added].

Miscellaneous facts
* A "scorched Natla" outfit is unlockable in Anniversary.
* Natla has featured in a number of Tomb Raider fan fiction stories, including "GM" and "The Dead" by Ostercy and "An Eye For An Eye" by Dr. Amazing, the latter being the winning entry in a Natla story writing competition, The Second Village of Tokakeriby TR Story Competition, 2002
* The Aramaic word "natla" (נטלא) means "the vessel used for washing hands". Another possible etymology of "natla" says it derives from "נטל " and should be viewed literally as "that which is lifted" or "that which is taken". (S. Fränkel, "Aramäische Fremdwörter im Arabischen," p. 65, and On Semitic Words in Greek and Latin W. Muss-Arnolt Transactions of the American Philological Association Vol. 23, (1892), pp. 35-156)
* There are some similarities between Natla and Ayesha, immortal anti-heroine of Rider Haggard's novel She . To quote Wikipedia; In the original novel, Ayesha is to a great extent selfish and amoral, caring very little for the feelings or even the lives of others so long as she gets what she wants. However, it is evident that, in the course of writing the novel, Haggard moved away from a purer conception of feminine evil. Indeed, one sees the process of transition fossilized in this sentence from the chapter entitled “Ayesha Unveils” - "I have heard of the beauty of celestial beings, now I saw it; only this beauty, with all its awful loveliness and purity, was evil — at least, at the time, it struck me as evil."
* Jacqueline Natla of Natla Technologies seems to be an early example of a character type popular in recent science fiction, a sinister female CEO of a sinister research multinational. Other examples include Catherine Weaver, the co-founder and current CEO of ZeiraCorp in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and Nina Sharp, the shady co-owner of Massive Dynamic, a science and technology research organisation, in Fringe .
* Even if not intended, there are similarities between the Anniversary version of Natla and the Egyptian god Seth from the game The Last Revelation. Both of them have wings (which both of them are able to hide, as shown when Natla is wearing a business suit and when Seth is imprisoned), are able to cast fireballs, are immortal and have power over the dead.
* Natla is the first character to appear in a Tomb Raider game.
When you cannot find a place where you are safe from the tiger, use the shotgun to get rid of it quickly. Temple of Xian is a level in Tomb Raider II.

At the beginning you see the Dagger of Xian in front of you, but as you go towards it you fall through a trap-door. Throughout the level along to really creepy music and being genuinely scared you find yourself by it again. However someone has beaten you and they are carried off into the Floating Islands after plunging the dagger into their heart.

This level is among the longest in Tomb Raider II, where Lara encounters various traps and enemies based upon Chinese legends and stories. Such as the spider cave is based on Journey to the West, one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature, with the name of 盤絲洞, literally the Cave of Tangled Silk.

Meaning of xian
The word Xian could be perceived by how the Chinese term is translated, as it could be one word for an immortal (仙, xian), or the location that the area is based, Xī'ān (西安), the capital of Shaanxi province in China and a sub-provincial city. Known as one of the most important cities in Chinese history, Xi'an is listed as one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China because it has been the capital of 13 dynasties, including the Zhou, Qin, Han, and Tang. Xi'an is also the eastern end of the Silk Road. However, it was called Chang'an (Traditional Chinese: 長安; Simplified Chinese: 长安, pinyin: Cháng'ān; literally "Perpetual Peace") in ancient times, when it used to be the capital of China.

You will meet Ravens (or Crows) in Tomb Raider II, by the Great Wall in China and outside the Barkhang Monastery in Tibet for the first time. They reappear in the London Section, in Tomb Raider III.
When in a large area, the crows will fly around and croak before deciding to strike. They attack by using their beak and claws, but don't cause too much damage. Lara needs to roll to get rid of them, when they attack her head.

Seth (also Set or Sutekh) is the Egyptian god of chaos and confusion. He is often depicted as a man with the head of a mysterious animal; sometimes interpreted as anteater. He made his appearance in The Last Revelation where Lara accidentally set him free when visiting his tomb. At the end of the game he appears as immortal boss in the level Temple of Horus.

Seth is the son of Nut and the brother of Osiris, Isis and Nephthys. It is said that Seth murdered his brother Osiris, causing a long, violent fight with his nephew Horus over who should be the earthly ruler. Finally other gods were called to judge and they decided that Horus should rule over the living.

He mysteriously appeared in the temple of Horus, probably travelling in non-corporeal, accompanied by a swarm of locusts - as said in the prophecy - before assuming his God form as shown in the image. He is invincible, and Lara escaped the temple by dodging his attacks which consisted of energy missiles and beams. Once Lara climbed out of the temple, she used the Amulet of Horus to close a trap door and seal Seth within the temple for all time.

He shoots green bolts from his gauntlets, is able to fly and also attack Lara with some very harmful melee attacks such as bouncing or impaling, this attack can be a "finalization" like if Lara's health is too low and she suffers this attack; he will get Lara by her neck and shortly after release. He also has power over the dead and the mythological creatures, and can also possess beings, like he did with Werner von Croy.

Seth destroyed the Armour of Horus, to stop Horus from being summoned by Lara who assembled the armour. The armour was destroyed but the Amulet of Horus was knocked into the surrounding water and retrieved by Lara.

Seth can be playable in the Tomb Raider Level Editor.
Tomb Raider IV: The Last Revelation is the fourth game of the Tomb Raider games series. The entire game, except for the two-level intro, takes place in Egypt and is the lengthiest game of the series. As well as a new engine, the game boasts more intricate levels. An expansion level for PC only was created afterwards in conjunction with The Times newspaper. No other expansion was created like the previous three games.
Summary
According to Egyptian legend, Horus, son of the light, outwitted the evil God Set and imprisoned him in a secret tomb. Five thousand years later, Lara Croft discovers the lost tomb and unwittingly unleashes the evil God Set, fulfilling the ancient prophecy of his return to plunge mankind into darkness! In a race against time, Lara must use all her wit and skill to reimprison Set and save the world from Armageddon. Pursued at every turn by her arch-rival, the unscrupulous archaeologist Werner Von Croy, Lara embarks on a journey of discovery across Egypt, where she must overcome the most ingenious puzzles and infernal traps ever devised, and face terrifying evil from beyond the grave...

With more twists and turns than an Egyptian labyrinth, this is heart stopping action-adventure; a Tomb Raider that truly offers...

The Last Revelation.

Features
* Epic Storyline: Go back in time and discover Lara's roots as an adventurer.
* All-new smooth single skin technology for both you and adult Lara Croft.
* New inventory system: allowing Lara to combine items to make tools, enhance weapons and solve puzzles during her adventuring!
* Interactive environments: Lara can shoot switches, read inscriptions, light torches, kick down doors, etc.
* More new moves than ever before: including climbing and swing from ropes.
* New weapons and tools: including the revolver, crossbow, binoculars, flashlight and various types of ammo.
* Highly evolved A.I.: enemies mimic, counter and dodge Lara's moves.

Gameplay
The game uses an upgraded engine, from the one that was used to produce the first 3 games. The title screen is different since the player will fly through first person perspective across many scenes related to Egypt, while selecting from the game menu. This is different compared to the traditional ring and passport system adopted by the first three games. The inventory is also displayed differently. Instead of the ring system, is uses a conveyor belt style approach which runs across the top of the screen.

Lara is constructed from more polygons and her mouth actually moves when she speaks, this makes a great change to the sporadic nodding that she would adopt when speaking in the previous games. This also applies to all other characters. As well as being able to perform all the moves of the previous games, she can now rope swing and shimmy around corners. She will continuously push/pull boxes without having to start and stop over again (a very annoying aspect of the previous games). She can also now pull levers with a oscillating motion. Although Lara can move more fluidly, the camera positions have found been found to pose some difficulties.

Weapons have changed also. With the introduction of new weapons, comes different types of ammunition. This applies to the shotgun, crossbow and grenade launcher. Different types of ammo have different capabilities, e.g. the poison and explosive crossbow ammunition. Also the laser sight makes its first appearance in this game. It is found separately and can be attached to the revolver and crossbow for more accurate shooting that takes place in the first person perspective.

When shooting, empty bullets can be seen being emptied from the weapon. Enhanced smoke effects are also used when a weapon is shot. When Lara climbs out of water, droplets of water can be seen dripping from all over her body. Sun reflection have been enhanced and also general weathering.

The game has new vehicles and Lara keeps her classic tomb raider outfit on throughout the game. Last revelation is a resurrection of the original Tomb Raider. As well as the outfit, the mass features of tombs and quiet locations backs up this resurrection. Croft Mansion does not appear in this game. The first level serves as a training course as Von Croy will guide Lara with tips.

Story
Prophecy
I Semerkhet, High Priest of Horus, forewarn that he who removes the Amulet shall have released Set. He who walked abroad with the Jackals at the dawn of man shall once again violate the Earth.

Set, ruler of evil, will again be free at the turn of a distant millennia. At his heel plagues and locusts. Harvests fail under the broken skies.

And Set sayeth:
"I am the shadows across the sun: I am the bringer of plagues. My wrath will consume all lands, and shall be ceaseless."
Tomb Raider III Story

Introduction
Millions of years ago, a meteor survived the plunge through the Earth's atmosphere, impacting in the then warm climes of Antarctica...

The first people to discover this land were a tribe of Polynesians. Despite the now freezing conditions, there was an abnormal abundance of life and the tribe settles, worshipping the metorite crater for the powers it appeared to hold. Generations later though, catastrophic events forced them to flee in terror...

Today, the same area is being excavated by the research company; RX Tech, who are picking up unusual readings from the meteorite's impact zone. It is in this zone that they uncover the body of a sailor from Charles Darwin's voyage on The Beagle. A few of the sailors had it seems, briefly explored the crater's interior...

Following the story from one of the sailor's journal, the research company have started to take particular interest in, not only the crater area, but other parts of the globe where the sailors subsequently travelled to...and died in...

One of these places is India - where Lara is currently searching for the legendary Infada artefact. Unaware of its true history, she only knows that in local beliefs it was supposed to hold great powers and hs been revered by tribes there throughout the years...

Game Elements
As well as performing all the moves in Tomb Raider II, Lara can now crawl, sprint, monkey swing and roll while sprinting. New weapons come into play as well as new vehicles. The game still uses the original engine used to create the previous two games. The graphics have improved since the portrayal of fire and smoke has been advanced, with real effects rather than showing a 2-D moving image as done in the previous two games. The graphics concerning flares makes use of this advancement. Secrets in the game are back to the original form of medipacks, ammunition and weapons. A bonus level can also be unlocked when 60 secrets have been collected.

With new weapons comes the Rocket Launcher, which only makes its appearance in this game. Lara also has new outfits including a sleek catsuit in London, to desert combats in Nevada. This game also introduces more screenplay to the plot, with short cutscenes appearing at the end of nearly every level. Tomb Raider III also introduces Lara to a more urban and modern environment, with the city of London, and the eerie Area 51.

Croft Mansion has also changed. The hedge maze has been replaced with a fantastic quad bike course which must be unlocked. The house has been given new décor with new secret passages. The assault course has been modified with the introduction of monkey bars and a shooting range. Lara may also use Winston as target practice. A secret treasure room is also up for exploring. The mansion serves as the game's training level. The assault course is timed like in the last game.

The City of Khamoon is a level in the original Tomb Raider.

Having obtained two thirds of the Scion, Lara combines them and is immediately struck by a vision of the last days of Atlantis. Along with visions of the three Atlantean Rulers and the destruction of their civilisation, she also sees the location of the final piece of the Scion. She heads to Egypt, to a hidden canyon near the Valley of the Kings, where she finds the lost entrance to the city of Khamoon carved into the rock face. There she meets many Panther Mummies and Black Panthers in her quest to find the last piece of this ancient artefact.
The Boulder was always a famous trap in the Tomb Raider Games. The boulder on the right is actually a Rolling Ball, there are also other boulders that are not spherical.

Besides boulders there are barrels, avalanches, rocks and more that will make you jump out of the way.

Prior to Last Revelation, the balls are not physics based, and will only roll in one direction at a constant speed, until they hit a ledge, wall, or a slope that faces the other way. However in the fourth game it is physics based and it bounces and rolls according to the terrain.

The boulder was not featured in Chronicles and The Angel of Darkness.

Boulders always kill Lara instantly unless she is in a vehicle. She only bleeds extensively in the first three games when flattened by a boulder.

Related Quotes
* After destroying the statue of Horus
:My wicked cousin has once again returned to the stars. It is I who shall rule over this world once more. Come forth, kneel and bow before your god before he extinguishes your worthless life.

* Possessing Von Croy
:We have it, the ancient ceremonial tablet. Take it and prepare it and see if the Croft woman has arrived with our armour.

Trivia
* Seth is sometimes mistakenly called Horus by fans.
City of Vilcabamba is the second level in the original Tomb Raider.

The city of Vilcabamba is a real-life location, as the last stronghold of the Incan Empire after the invasion of the Spanish. Vilcabamba was built shortly before the Spanish invasion, was used as a stronghold from 1539 and fell in 1572. It was found again by Hiram Bingham, the discoverer of the far better-known site of Machu Picchu, but he failed to realise it's significance. It was ignored for decades until the excavations of Professor Edmundo Guillan and Polish explorers Tony Halik and Elżbieta Dzikowska that Vilcabamba was found once again.

Vilcabamba is not located within a mountain, but is sited in a rainforest.

When Lara follows the footprints of wolves in the first Level of Tomb Raider, she will come past the first set. They are not poisonous. You can identify them by the slots in the walls. They can be found throughout Peru. They reappear in Tomb Raider III in poisonous form. (see Poisonous Dart Shooters)
There are two ways to get past. Either just run past or swandive over them. The second method is more complicated. In the later games Lara will be able to crouch underneath.

Sophia Leigh is a character from Tomb Raider III.

In the first level of the London section, Thames Wharf, Lara is attacked by a goon in the end. Lara forces him to tell her who he is working for. He tells her that he is working for Sophia Leigh, like his father and grandfather before him. Confused, Lara asks him how old Sophia is and he replies that she's about 30 years old.

Sophia is in possession of the Eye of Isis, one of the four artefacts that come from the heart of an ancient meteorite.

In the Level City, the last level of the London section, Sophia attacks Lara by shooting green energy bolts at her.

Sophia returns in the Lost Artifact level Reunion.

Trivia
* Sophia Leigh was created by using the same model as Lara.
* In the Official Tomb Raider Files book Sophia has middle-length brown hair and red lips, this could possibly be an early model of Sophia Leigh.
