In Japan, [[Lara Croft]] didn't become as well known as she did in English-speaking countries. She was more known as being a supermodel rather than an archaeologist and adventurer.

Some of the most noticeable changes in the localized Japanese versions of the series is the difficulty rating being lowered, especially in the earlier [[Playstation]] versions. Prime examples being that an enemy's health was lowered, making them easier to kill, the [[medipacks]] cured her more and most of the manuals that came in the game casing, contained a walk-through.
Other changes include the use of Japanese kana in the menus, and all in game dialogue was changed as well using a few famous Japanese Seiyuu (Voice Actors).

'''Tomb Raider: The Pretty Fugitive (トゥームレイダー美しき逃亡者)''' is the sixth installment in the Tomb Raider game series, and also the sixth localized into Japanese.

Not much about this game is different to it's english counterpart, [[Angel of Darkness|Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness]]. The only noticable exceptions are the implementation of Japanese language ingame text/subtitles, Japanese language audio, and noticable ingame changes to make the game easier. For example, lower health for enemies, making them easier to kill. This is quite common when it comes to games being localized for Japanese players.

This game was released in October, 2003 on the [[Playstation 2]] and [[PC]] platforms.
The [[Playstation 2|PS2]] versions are rather easy to find and purchase online, yet the [[PC]] version is extremely rare now and not many foreigners can get their hands on it, let alone Japanese fans themselves.

'''Tomb Raider''' was the first of the series, the game that started the legacy. It was impressive at the time for its 3D graphics, player interaction, and mix of action and exploration. It also established the third person perspective that was used in all subsequent games, and introduces the classic Tomb Raider game engine. This game marks the first appearance of the protagonist of the Tomb Raider games: [[Lara Croft]].

== Gameplay ==

Tomb Raider is third person perspective, with the camera following Lara. She can run, walk, vault, shimmy, jump, move blocks, swim, swan dive, roll, shoot and perform numerous acrobatic aerial manoeuvres. She automatically locks on to enemies and can run and jump while locked on, giving her the advantage to jump behind the enemy while shooting it in the back. The AI of enemies is mediocre. When confronted with a lion, it will run, stop to growl, run again, stop to growl again, and so forth. This can be seen as unrealistic, but was impressive at its time, and does little to inhibit the gameplay.

When Lara is jumping to another platform, she must execute a well timed jump for longer distances, with simple stationary jumps for shorter distances. Some platforms may require Lara to perform a running jump, which causes her to grab the edge of the platform and then vault up. To get to another platform, Lara must grab onto the edge of the platform she is standing on, and shimmy across a group of edges before she can vault up. Lara receives damage from dropping from great height, and a long enough fall will kill her. There are also numerous opponents that will do their best to kill Lara, and a whole host of traps and obstacles that inflict varying degrees of damage.

There are some puzzles in the game but they are more practical than mathematical. For example, some doors may be timed and Lara must use a lever to open it then cross a series of obstacles, usually requiring timed jumps. Some puzzles require the finding of items and keys. The [[Palace Midas]] level requires the player to utilise a magical process in order to complete the level.

In the PlayStation and Sega Saturn versions of Tomb Raider, saving the game is restricted to fixed save points within each level, marked by a floating blue save crystal. When Lara touches one of these the option to save is made available. The scarcity of these points, however, means that if the player dies, large portions of each level must be replayed, much to the players' frustration. Following criticism on this system, it was changed in later games. The PC and Mac versions of the game allow the player to save at any time.

== Development ==

Preliminary work on Tomb Raider commenced in 1993, but it was not until November 1996 that the game actually saw the light of day as a retail product. The title was crafted by Core Design of Europe, who took 18 months to develop it. The team consisted of six people, among them Toby Gard, who is credited with the invention of Lara Croft. The character went through several changes before Core settled on the version she became famous for. In its earliest conception, Lara Croft was a male placeholder for an as yet undefined character, but as Core decided that puzzles and stealth should be more important to the game than action, they found that these requirements better suited a female character than a classic male action hero.

As such Lara was born under the name Laura Cruz. "Laura" was later dropped in favour of Lara, to appeal more to American audiences. At the same time, her back story started to shape up and it was decided she should become more British, hence Cruz was changed to Croft to accommodate this. Personality-wise, Lara was a cold-blooded militaristic type in the early concepts. According to Toby Gard, the idea to make her a female Indiana Jones was not present from the beginning, but rather grew naturally out of the development process as the game took its final form.

Lara's famous breast size was in actuality brought about by accident. Toby Gard was fudging around with the model when he accidentally blew up Lara's bosom to 150% of what he intended it to be. As he was resizing it back to normal, the other designers saw what he was working on and told him they loved it and that he should keep the double size.

Interestingly enough, it is Core's contention that the company was struggling somewhat with 32-bit development at that time. It is also rumoured that Tomb Raider's publishing company Eidos was near bankruptcy when Tomb Raider was created. The first glints of the game were seen on Sega Saturn development kits. However, ultimately, it would be the PlayStation rendition that would be known best.

It also established the third person perspective that was used in all subsequent games, and introduces the classic Tomb Raider game engine. == Gameplay ==

Tomb Raider is third person perspective, with the camera following Lara. She can run, walk, vault, shimmy, jump, move blocks, swim, swan dive, roll, shoot and perform numerous acrobatic aerial manoeuvres. She automatically locks on to enemies and can run and jump while locked on, giving her the advantage to jump behind the enemy while shooting it in the back. The AI of enemies is mediocre. When confronted with a lion, it will run, stop to growl, run again, stop to growl again, and so forth. This can be seen as unrealistic, but was impressive at its time, and does little to inhibit the gameplay.

When Lara is jumping to another platform, she must execute a well timed jump for longer distances, with simple stationary jumps for shorter distances. Some platforms may require Lara to perform a running jump, which causes her to grab the edge of the platform and then vault up. To get to another platform, Lara must grab onto the edge of the platform she is standing on, and shimmy across a group of edges before she can vault up. Lara receives damage from dropping from great height, and a long enough fall will kill her. There are also numerous opponents that will do their best to kill Lara, and a whole host of traps and obstacles that inflict varying degrees of damage.

There are some puzzles in the game but they are more practical than mathematical. For example, some doors may be timed and Lara must use a lever to open it then cross a series of obstacles, usually requiring timed jumps. Some puzzles require the finding of items and keys. The [[Palace Midas]] level requires the player to utilise a magical process in order to complete the level.

In the PlayStation and Sega Saturn versions of Tomb Raider, saving the game is restricted to fixed save points within each level, marked by a floating blue save crystal. When Lara touches one of these the option to save is made available. The scarcity of these points, however, means that if the player dies, large portions of each level must be replayed, much to the players' frustration. Following criticism on this system, it was changed in later games. The PC and Mac versions of the game allow the player to save at any time.

'''Tomb Raider''' was the first of the series, the game that started the legacy. It was impressive at the time for its 3D graphics, player interaction, and mix of action and exploration. It also established the third person perspective that was used in all subsequent games, and introduces the classic Tomb Raider game engine. This game marks the first appearance of the protagonist of the Tomb Raider games: [[Lara Croft]].

The game was released in late 1996. A PDA and [[Nokia N-Gage]] (2003) version were released later. An expansion was released in 1998 featuring a separate 4-level adventure. This expansion was known as [[Unfinished Business|Tomb Raider Unfinished Business]].

== Gameplay ==

Tomb Raider is third person perspective, with the camera following Lara. She can run, walk, vault, shimmy, jump, move blocks, swim, swan dive, roll, shoot and perform numerous acrobatic aerial manoeuvres. She automatically locks on to enemies and can run and jump while locked on, giving her the advantage to jump behind the enemy while shooting it in the back. The AI of enemies is mediocre. When confronted with a lion, it will run, stop to growl, run again, stop to growl again, and so forth. This can be seen as unrealistic, but was impressive at its time, and does little to inhibit the gameplay.

When Lara is jumping to another platform, she must execute a well timed jump for longer distances, with simple stationary jumps for shorter distances. Some platforms may require Lara to perform a running jump, which causes her to grab the edge of the platform and then vault up. To get to another platform, Lara must grab onto the edge of the platform she is standing on, and shimmy across a group of edges before she can vault up. Lara receives damage from dropping from great height, and a long enough fall will kill her. There are also numerous opponents that will do their best to kill Lara, and a whole host of traps and obstacles that inflict varying degrees of damage.

There are some puzzles in the game but they are more practical than mathematical. For example, some doors may be timed and Lara must use a lever to open it then cross a series of obstacles, usually requiring timed jumps. Some puzzles require the finding of items and keys. The [[Palace Midas]] level requires the player to utilise a magical process in order to complete the level.

In the PlayStation and Sega Saturn versions of Tomb Raider, saving the game is restricted to fixed save points within each level, marked by a floating blue save crystal. When Lara touches one of these the option to save is made available. The scarcity of these points, however, means that if the player dies, large portions of each level must be replayed, much to the players' frustration. Following criticism on this system, it was changed in later games. The PC and Mac versions of the game allow the player to save at any time.

== Development ==

Preliminary work on Tomb Raider commenced in 1993, but it was not until November 1996 that the game actually saw the light of day as a retail product. The title was crafted by Core Design of Europe, who took 18 months to develop it. The team consisted of six people, among them Toby Gard, who is credited with the invention of Lara Croft. The character went through several changes before Core settled on the version she became famous for. In its earliest conception, Lara Croft was a male placeholder for an as yet undefined character, but as Core decided that puzzles and stealth should be more important to the game than action, they found that these requirements better suited a female character than a classic male action hero.

As such Lara was born under the name Laura Cruz. "Laura" was later dropped in favour of Lara, to appeal more to American audiences. At the same time, her back story started to shape up and it was decided she should become more British, hence Cruz was changed to Croft to accommodate this. Personality-wise, Lara was a cold-blooded militaristic type in the early concepts. According to Toby Gard, the idea to make her a female Indiana Jones was not present from the beginning, but rather grew naturally out of the development process as the game took its final form.

Lara's famous breast size was in actuality brought about by accident. Toby Gard was fudging around with the model when he accidentally blew up Lara's bosom to 150% of what he intended it to be. As he was resizing it back to normal, the other designers saw what he was working on and told him they loved it and that he should keep the double size.

Interestingly enough, it is Core's contention that the company was struggling somewhat with 32-bit development at that time. It is also rumoured that Tomb Raider's publishing company Eidos was near bankruptcy when Tomb Raider was created. The first glints of the game were seen on Sega Saturn development kits. However, ultimately, it would be the PlayStation rendition that would be known best.

== Gameplay ==

The game uses the same engine that created [[The Last Revelation]]. Lara can perform all the moves from the previous games but Chronicles boasts no new moves. The only weapon to be added to Lara's arsenal is the grappling gun which is only used twice in the game. The HK Gun is not a new weapon, but rather an upgrade of the [[MP5]]. Graphics are slightly improved, with better reflections off Lara's catsuit, a new outfit which Lara wears later in the game.

The only unique essence about Chronicles is the story telling mode which it adopts, the short but snappy stories do not intertwine with each other. [[Larson]] and [[Pierre Du Pont]] make a second appearance giving us some chronological order to the adventures that take place. Along with Chronicles, comes the [[Level Editor]], a chance for players to edit rooms and create their own obstacles, then test them using Lara.

Again [[Croft Mansion]] does not appear in the game. Instead, a short obstacle and training course disguised as a backstage area of an opera house makes an appearance at the beginning of the level: Streets of Rome.

== Gameplay ==
The game uses an upgraded engine, from the one that was used to produce the first 3 games. The title screen is different since the player will fly through first person perspective across many scenes related to Egypt, while selecting from the game menu. This is different compared to the traditional ring and passport system adopted by the first three games. The inventory is also displayed differently. Instead of the ring system, is uses a conveyor belt style approach which runs across the top of the screen.

Lara is constructed from more polygons and her mouth actually moves when she speaks, this makes a great change to the sporadic nodding that she would adopt when speaking in the previous games. This also applies to all other characters. As well as being able to perform all the moves of the previous games, she can now rope swing and shimmy around corners. She will continuously push/pull boxes without having to start and stop over again (a very annoying aspect of the previous games). She can also now pull levers with a oscillating motion. Although Lara can move more fluidly, the camera positions have found been found to pose some difficulties.

Weapons have changed also. With the introduction of new weapons, comes different types of ammunition. This applies to the shotgun, crossbow and grenade launcher. Different types of ammo have different capabilities, e.g. the poison and explosive crossbow ammunition. Also the laser sight makes its first appearance in this game. It is found separately and can be attached to the revolver and crossbow for more accurate shooting that takes place in the first person perspective.

When shooting, empty bullets can be seen being emptied from the weapon. Enhanced smoke effects are also used when a weapon is shot. When Lara climbs out of water, droplets of water can be seen dripping from all over her body. Sun reflection have been enhanced and also general weathering.

The game has new vehicles and Lara keeps her classic tomb raider outfit on throughout the game. Last revelation is a resurrection of the original [[Tomb Raider]]. As well as the outfit, the mass features of tombs and quiet locations backs up this resurrection. [[Croft Mansion]] does not appear in this game. The first level serves as a training course as Von Croy will guide Lara with tips.
